Native Plant Pollinator Garden
The Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) Titusville Native Plant Pollinator Garden is a community demonstration garden in Titusville FL managed by the Indian River Lagoon Aquatic Preserves. The goal of the garden is to encourage Indian River Lagoon-friendly landscaping practices throughout the region.
The Indian River Lagoon watershed, the area of land that channels water into the lagoon, is larger than the entire state of Delaware and is home to over 1.8 million Floridians. The increase in population and development within the watershed of the Indian River Lagoon over the last hundred years has had a major impact on water quality, by greatly increasing the amount of run-off and pollutants entering the lagoon. Water that “runs off” the land and enters the lagoon has the potential to carry high levels of nutrients associated with agricultural and residential fertilizers, as well as lawncare chemicals, herbicides, and pesticides.
Lagoon-friendly landscaping helps to reduce the amount of nutrient-rich runoff entering the lagoon through simple landscaping practices. These landscaping practices can also provide habitat for native wildlife. The FDEP Titusville Native Plant Pollinator Garden project spreads awareness of the connection between land and the lagoon, and the positive impacts of lagoon-friendly landscaping.
